Rights of persons with disabilities Act, 2016
The “Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act” was enacted in 2016, it replaced the earlier “Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995”. The 2016 Act was a comprehensive piece of legislation aimed at fulfilling India’s obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which India ratified in 2007.
The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, significantly broadened the definition of ‘disability’, recognizing 21 conditions as disabilities, compared to only seven in the 1995 Act.
National Building Code of India (NBC)
The National Building Code of India (NBC) sets out requirements for designing buildings in a way that ensures the safety of occupants, including features like fire exits and other means of egress that would be used in an evacuation. The NBC is prepared by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and is typically enforced by local bodies.
